Subpolar Southern Ocean Seasonal Variability of the Geostrophic Circulation From Multi‐Mission Satellite Altimetry

چکیده

Abstract A novel multi‐satellite product is used to shed light on the sea surface height seasonal cycle and associated geostrophic circulation in subpolar Southern Ocean. We find three main modes of variability governing Sea Level Anomaly cycle, all them primarily governed by wind forcing. The mode with seasonality gyres large‐scale stress curl, qualitatively consistent Sverdrup dynamics. second related Antarctic Slope Current (ASC), coastal easterlies, a rapid circumpolar propagation anomalous sea‐level along continental slope that dynamically so‐called Mode. first two induce an acceleration ASC winter. third appears be driven ice‐modulated induces offshore extension from autumn

Remote sensing of surface ocean circulation with satellite altimetry.

The Geodynamics Experimental Ocean Satellite (GEOS-3) radar altimeter has provided some information on the dynamic sea-surface topography of the global oceans. Regional studies of the densely surveyed Sargasso Sea indicate that the average nontidal variability of the oceans is +/- 28 centimeters. Sea-surface highs and lows determined from GEOS-3 altimetry correlate favorably with eddy structure...

Ocean circulation from altimetry: progresses and challenges

The paper provides a review of recent progresses in physical oceanography, such as results on studying ocean circulation and mesoscale ocean dynamics derived from satellite altimetry. Since 1992, satellite altimetry has provided an unprecedented 16 years monitoring of sea level and ocean circulation variations. Continuous measurements from satellites like TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 help us und...

Seasonal variability of the subpolar gyres in the Southern Ocean: a numerical investigation based on transfer operators

The detection of regions in the ocean that are coherent over an extended period of time is a fundamental problem in many oceanic applications. For instance such regions are important for studying the transport of marine species and for the distribution of nutrients. In this study we demonstrate the efficacy of transfer operators in detecting and analysing such structures. We focus first on the ...

Altimetry : Observing Ocean Variability from Space

D I R E C T measurement of large-scale ocean currents with current meter arrays is difficult and costly on basin scales. Since large-scale currents are very nearly in geostrophic balance, their velocity can be calculated from the pressure gradient on an equigeopotential surface. The surface geostrophic current therefore can be calculated from the deviation of sea level from the equigeopotential...

A daily global mesoscale ocean eddy dataset from satellite altimetry

Mesoscale ocean eddies are ubiquitous coherent rotating structures of water with radial scales on the order of 100 kilometers. Eddies play a key role in the transport and mixing of momentum and tracers across the World Ocean. We present a global daily mesoscale ocean eddy dataset that contains ~45 million mesoscale features and 3.3 million eddy trajectories that persist at least two days as ide...
